When driving along the road with dogs, it’s no secret that they love to stick their heads out the window and get some fresh air. There’s something joyous about the way they get so excited to take in the air and scenery.

For dogs in Florida, that small joy may be a thing of the past since a proposed bill would make it illegal for dogs to stick their heads out of the car while it’s moving.

Under proposed Florida Senate Bill 932, it would be illegal to “allow a dog to extend its head or any other body part outside a motor vehicle window while the person is operating the motor vehicle on a public roadway.”

Beyond that, the bill would also make it illegal to hold a dog in your lap while driving or position them in any way that could cause distractions to the driver.

The bill states:

“A dog being transported in a motor vehicle on a public roadway must be:
(a) Secured in a crate that is an appropriate size for the dog
(b) Restrained safely with a harness or pet seat belt, other than a neck restraint, designed for use in a motor vehicle; or (c) Under the physical control of a person other than the operator of the motor vehicle.”

The purpose of the proposed bill is to enhance the safety of pets traveling in motor vehicles, as well as to help reduce accidents caused by distracted driving.

According to WPTV, the legislation would take effect on July 1 if it passes both chambers of Florida’s legislature.
