When Alison Jubb lost her beloved cat Topsey in mid-2021, she worked tirelessly to find her.

She put out calls on social media, put up posters, and held out hope. But time passed slowly, and Topsey didn’t show up. It was as if she’d simply disappeared.

Then, one day, Topsey reappeared — on live television!

“My daughter-in-law rang me last night and said, ‘are you watching the football match?’” Jubb told ITV. “I said ‘no,’ and she said ‘there’s a cat that ran on the football pitch and it just looks like Topsey’ and I sort of laughed it off because I thought it won’t be. Then this morning I got a phone call from the vet to say that they’d got her because she’s chipped.”

Before she was discovered to be Topsey, the curious cat had been dubbed “the Hillsborough Cat” when she interrupted the match between Sheffield Wednesday and Wigan Athletic at Hillsborough Stadium.

Though she brought a smile to the faces of the crowd as she ran onto the field, Topsey had actually been injured shortly before during an encounter with another animal. Now that she is reunited with her family, they are beginning her road to recovery.

Fortunately, they aren’t walking that road alone. When Topsey burst onto the screens of the thousands watching the game, she got their attention and their affection. A fundraiser to cover Topsey’s health costs, which include nerve damage and a neck bone fracture, has soared past its original goal and now sits at over £11,000 pounds, with the family pledging any left over funds to the Pet Samaritans.

“I was very surprised, I wasn’t convinced we’d raise it. There’s obviously a lot of animal lovers out there,” Jubb told ITV about the fundraiser.

Fortunately, Topsy has a long and happy life to look forward to after her brief brush with fame, thanks to the kindness of strangers from around the country and the world!
