Bonfire Night in the UK is a celebration that dates back to Guy Fawkes and his failed attempt to bomb parliament in 1605.
While it has a storied history, in practice it has become a night of revelry, fireworks, and bonfires throughout parts of Europe.
Just like July 4th in the US, the fireworks at night have often been blamed for a variety of accidents, damages, and even tragedies.
For one family in South Wales, bonfire night’s impact led to a tragic loss. Garry and Ceri Hamilton were letting their 5-year-old Cocker Spaniel, Cadi, out for a bathroom break in their fenced-in yard when the loud boom of fireworks broke out.
“Hope everyone enjoyed their fireworks, we lost the most beautiful girl in the world to them last night,” owner Caitlin Hamilton said, according to Valley Times on Facebook.
In the chaos and confusion of the fireworks, Cadi ran in a blind panic. “She went outside for a wee and broke out of the fence, ran blind and we couldn’t find her,” Hamilton continued.
Unfortunately, when she ran out onto the road, Cadi was struck and killed by a motorist. Her passing left “the biggest Cadi shaped hole in our hearts and she didn’t deserve her fate, just short of her 6th birthday,” Hamilton added.
The Facebook post comes amid a spate of reports that dogs died of stress or accidents among the confusion of the night.
Pet owners, along with parents and those with PTSD, have long lobbied for controls on fireworks and encouraged revelers to be responsible and considerate.
