If we don’t snore ourselves, then chances are at least one person in our household does. It’s usually not a big deal unless it keeps waking you up. Or…more mysteriously, if it seems to be coming from under your house.

There is nothing scarier than hearing snoring coming under the home. And one household got quite the shock when five bears were discovered taking a wintery hibernation nap beneath in an unsecured crawl space!

The family that were living on the property were unaware that they were sharing their space with bears – that is until the mother bear and her four cubs finally woke up from their slumber.

Of course, they heard the sounds of snoring, but they weren’t quite sure what it was or where exactly in their house it was coming from.

As BEAR League shared on Facebook, “It was a home where people lived and they thought they heard some odd rumbling, snoring-like noises but ignored it because it simply didn’t make sense and the neighbors said they were imagining it because they didn’t hear anything.”

The unexpected houseguests were finally discovered when they woke up on the 20th of April this year. Needless to say, the homeowners were quite surprised to put two and two together and realize that the mysterious sounds they’d been hearing were actually a family of bears. They got in touch with BEAR League for help removing the furry lodgers, and were shocked to discover how many of them were actually living under the house.

The Executive Director for BEAR League, Ann Bryant, shared with HuffPost, “The residents didn’t realize there were five bears under their house until we got there and told the bears to come out… and then we counted five. They had just thought it was one very noisy bear.”

We can only imagine that the homeowners must’ve been quite shocked to think that the whole of winter they spent living right above a sleeping family of apex predators. But we imagine this means that they’ll definitely be making sure that their home’s crawlspace is secured in order to avoid future repeats of the situation. It’s a story that BEAR League hopes will help to remind other families living in areas with bears to do the same in order to avoid surprise houseguests looking for a place to hibernate for winter.

As for the mama bear, the BEAR League is quite familiar with her. Apparently, she had three of her own cubs last year, however, she also adopted a fourth cub that had been orphaned. Hopefully this little bear family can find somewhere nice to live that isn’t inhabited by humans.
