The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) has joined forces with Muncie Animal Care and Services Department and Muncie Police Department to rescue dozens of cats from what is being called “one of the worst animal cases” in the area.

On October 19, rescuers entered the 1,500-square-foot home and were horrified by what they saw. Dozens of skinny cats were living in layers of filth.

Many of the cats were also suffering from upper respiratory infections, skin infections and injuries. They were removed from the property and brought to an undisclosed location to be examined and treated by a vet.

Although the cats have clearly been neglected and suffering for most if not all of their lives, HSUS said in a press release that several followed rescuers around the home looking for attention.

“These cats are suffering—I haven’t seen animals living in conditions like this before. Walking around, you have to be careful not to slip in the layers of filth. These cats are gentle, sweet and crave attention,” said Kitty Block, president and CEO of the Humane Society of the United States. “We are grateful to the City of Muncie for intervening. I’m honored to be working alongside our rescue team as we help give these cats a new beginning.”

Deplorable conditions don’t even begin to describe the state of the home, which will be condemned after all the cats are removed.

Chief Nathan Sloan of the Muncie Police Department said, “This was one of the worst animal cases and the most deplorable living conditions I have seen in my 20 years of law enforcement.”

All of the cats will eventually be put up for adoption and go on to find loving forever homes.

Muncie Animal Care & Services thanked the HSUS for coming to the rescue and the community for their support.

They wrote, “We’ve seen so many hoarding cases this year, people moving and abandoning their pets, dumping them on the road in the middle of nowhere, and it’s heartbreaking. We are truly blessed with the greatest supporters in and around this community. Considering how full we are currently, HSUS stepping in takes that extra strain off of us, and we appreciate them so much for that!! We will do what we’ve always done which is make sure these animals receive the care they need, and find them loving homes. It takes a village, and we’re so lucky that you all are a part of this one. Thank you again!”
