An open-water swimmer credits a pod of dolphins for protecting him from a great white shark while out for a swim in the ocean.
Adam Walker is a world-renowned open-water swimmer and he’s one of just 138 people who’ve successfully swam the 16-mile Cook Straight.
Walker made the swim back in 2014, but he didn’t do it alone. Unplanned by him, he was accompanied by a pod of around 10 dolphins.
According to People, the dolphins swam with Walker the whole way, even pausing when he had to hydrate and feed.
But they didn’t just swim alongside him – they protected him!
As People reports, Walker was allegedly in close proximity to a great white shark but he had no idea of the danger that was near him. Thankfully, the dolphin pod had his back and they scared the shark away!
Walker detailed the incident on Facebook, writing:
“Yesterday I swam the 6th of the ‘oceans seven’ swims ‘Cook Strait’ in 8 hours 36 mins. But that doesn’t tell the whole story rolling waves, big currents but more important than that a dream come true swimming with dolphins over an hour!!”
He went on to say, “I’d like to think they were protecting me and guiding me home!!! This swim will stay with me forever.”
