After being stranded on ice in the Detroit River for four long days, a little dog was successfully rescued. Now, he’s finally found a forever home to call his own – with the man who saved his life.
Friends of the River Rouge Animal Shelter shared about the dog’s miraculous rescue back in February. Fittingly, they named the little pup Miracle.
According to the shelter, when Miracle was spotted out on the ice, no one was available to rescue him. Crowds formed around the banks of the Detroit River to watch in horror as the dog clung to the ice and survived the “treacherous environment and extreme weather conditions.”
Finally, on the fourth day, a man named Jude Mead decided to take matters into his hands and set out on a rescue mission to save the pooch before it was too late. In an updated post on Facebook, the rescue shared that Jude actually put his life on the line to save the dog. They wrote:

“On Saturday, the 4th day…..a hero decided another day wasn’t going by. He risked his life to save HIS life. That dog is now named Miracle, bc it absolutely is a miracle he’s alive.”
They went on to say that Miracle was ready for a forever home, and despite the many applications they received for the dog, they determined that his rescuer was the best-fit home for him.
They said, “in the end, and after a VERY CAREFUL, stringent, and thorough application process, which included a home visit as well (thank you to our Canadian friend Mary) it was decided that the man who saved Miracle was the very best fit for him.”
The shelter recounted how Miracle’s adoption brought the story full circle. “Today the story came full circle. Today the little Miracle dog was placed into the hands of the hero who saved his life. That’s right….this dog who defied ALL THE ODDS will now live happily ever after w the man who saved his life. Miracle could not ASK for a better or more ideal family to love him!”
According to PEOPLE, Miracle is thought to be 12 to 18 months old and his former owner is unknown. After being stranded on the ice for four days, he somehow maintained a stable core temperature, though his paws may have suffered frostbite.
As Friends of the River Rouge Animal Shelter shared, Miracle will get to spend the rest of his days with his new Canadian family. What a happy ending to the story!
