On September 22, Coconino County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) received a call about a small plane crash in Paria Plateau near Page, Arizona. The plane took off from San Martin, CA, and was headed to Paige airport but crashed just before making it to the destination.

Upon arrival, CCSO confirmed the pilot, Jim Petersen, was dead. The passenger, Uta Petersen, survived but with injuries. She was immediately flown to St, George Utah Hospital to be treated.

Arizona Department of Public Safety (AZDPS) Air Rescue team arrived to investigate the scene to try and discover what caused the crash.

“As they arrived at the crash scene that night, our pilot and trooper-paramedics spotted a dog sitting near the plane wreckage. Unfortunately, the dog ran away as our helicopter landed at the scene and could not be located,” posted AZDPS.

Three days later when the crew returned with federal investigators, they saw the same dog resting near the plane. The loyal pup had returned to the wreckage looking for his family.

This time they brought water and a leash and were able to lure the frightened dog to them. Aside from being exhausted, thirsty, and hungry, the dog appeared to be in good health.

It was a miracle he survived the plane crash without injury and then made it on his own for three days in the wild.

The team flew the dog back to the airport and met up with a CCSO officer who reunited the “tough guy” with his family.

“AZDPS is grateful we could assist CCSO and help reunite this pup with the family at such a difficult time. Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their loved ones,” wrote the rescue team.

People commended everyone involved for rescuing the dog and returning him to his family. One person said, “It’s wonderful that the dog was able to be rescued. Thank you. Dogs can bring so much comfort to a grieving family.”
