A dog enjoying a sunny day on a boat with her family fell overboard off the coast of North Carolina and was rescued by the U.S. Coast Guard.

A crew conducting Law Enforcement missions received a call about a dog named Myla who went overboard in Pamlico Sound and immediately responded.

Pamlico Sound is the largest lagoon along the East Coast stretching 20 miles wide and 80 miles long, so finding a lost dog could take some time. Rescuers began to search the area and noticed water moving and headed in that direction. Luckily it was a calm day and rescuers spotted the dog swimming and attempting to stay afloat.

Myla was in the water for roughly 30 minutes, according to the sister of one of the rescuers, Joe Zito. Cristina Zito shared the pup “swam 1 mile” in that time.

She was understandably doggone tired when crew members reached her and lifted her into the boat.

“After a quick inspection to ensure no injuries, the exhausted pup was given VIP treatment by the crew and was eventually reunited with its owners,” stated Coast Guard officials.

The rescue was captured on video and shared by U.S. Coast Guard Station Hatteras Inlet. They wrote, “We want to congratulate Myla on being a good girl and an amazing doggie swimmer!”

The rescue crew, also known as Coasties, received a lot of praise and thanks for their efforts and many advised the owners to get a life vest for Myla.

One person said, “Great job. God bless our U. S. Coast Guard. We love our Coasties. 💙💙💙❤️❤️❤️”

Another commented, “Kudos to the crew – advise the owner – when taking their dog boating – life jacket should be mandatory for her too….”

Some dogs like retrievers are great swimmers, but even they can tire out if forced to swim a long way or for an extended period of time. Life jackets are a must for dogs who go boating with their families. The vest help keep dogs buoyant, and the bright color makes them more visible if they happen to fall overboard.
