Cats like to rule the house and leave their mark on everything. Of course, they also spend a lot of time lounging and that’s where cat furniture comes in.

Many people invest in cat trees or beds to make their feline friends as comfortable as possible, but those items are often bulky and unattractive. Beyond that, they’re usually not very environmentally friendly since they end up in landfills once the cats are done with them.

Knowing the struggles of typical cat furniture, designer Emma Holland Denvir created a whole new concept for cat furniture: An environmentally-friendly, chic Cat Couch!

The miniature sofa is hand-crafted with felines in mind and is sold by Work in Progress, a company dedicated to showcasing the work of minority designers and manufacturers.

Emma announced the launch of the Cat Couch on National Cat Day on Instagram, saying, “I’m extremely excited to announce the soft-launch of Cat Couch over at @wip.la. I personally designed and prototyped Cat Couch almost 5 years ago, looking to create an object that both my cats and I would enjoy. Cat Couch was and still is the answer.”

She went on to say that her cats are still using the original prototype of the Cat Couch that’s nearly five years old!

According to the product description, the Cat Couch is hand-crafted from Baltic Birch plywood and was designed “to be a beautiful receptacle for a recyclable and replaceable scratch-pad.”

The description says, “Scratch, flip, scratch, recycle, insert new scratch-pad. We aim to replace all of the uggo, wasteful cat furniture out there with a solution that is sustainable and chic.”

Once your cat has scratched up the scratchpad portion of the couch, you can simply remove it, recycle it, and insert a new one! It allows the couch to last far longer than alternatives and causes less waste.

What makes the Cat Couch even more appealing is the adorable patterned cushions it comes with. The three different cushion options are designed by Block Shop and are hand-printed in small batches using non-toxic pigments.

You can learn more about Cat Couches on the Work in Progress website. They’re currently sold out, but they plan to have new inventory to ship out beginning December 1st, 2021.
