Celebrate Shelter Pets Day was founded in 2010 when The Humane Society and Maddie’s Fund launched a social media campaign called “Shelter Pets Take Over Facebook Day.” After realizing people were more likely to adopt a pet after hearing from other adopters, they urged rescued pet parents to flood the internet with heartwarming photos and stories about how adoption changed their life.

“Sharing the story of how much your pet means to you on Celebrate Shelter Pets Day is a powerful way to get pets adopted,” a Maddie’s Fund representative, Amy Zeifang, explained. “When people looking for a pet hear how much their friends and family love their adopted pets, and how much their pets have added to their lives, they’ll be eager to have that same joy themselves.”
