James McAuley, owner and operator of Parkshaw Farm in County Antrim, Ireland, stood in the hay-strewn corner of a pen that had just recently been the site of a calf’s birth. He wore a pleased, if slightly confused, expression on his face.

The day was February 14th, 2020 — Valentine’s Day. “I just can’t believe the way it’s taken off,” he was saying to Belfast Live reporter Jessica Black. By his side was the star of the show – a newborn calf by the name of Be My Valentine. Be My Valentine had charmed not just McAuley and his family, but thousands of strangers online. She’d gone viral for her distinct, white marking on her forehead in the shape of a perfect heart.

“I’ve seen ones kind of like it but it’s just the date, being Valentine’s Day. It was my mum that said ‘look at the heart on her head!’,” McAuley continued. McAuley shared that Be My Valentine was especially loved by his kids, for her gentle disposition. She’s a jersey calf, a breed known in the livestock community for being “docile and rather easy to manage,” as well as their delicious, naturally-high-in-butterfat milk.
