There is something that I will never understand for as long as I live – and that is how people can abandon animals as though they’re garbage. Authorities in New Zealand are currently asking for public cooperation in finding out who was responsible for discarding a box of newborn puppies at a beach in Whanganui.

The Whanganui SPCA shared that the tiny little puppies were found abandoned on the 26th of January at a place called North Mole by someone who was taking their lunch break at the beach.

The SPCA area manager, Danny Auger, stated that the kind person who rescued them had heard squealing noises. He followed the sounds until he happened upon a box, and when he looked inside, he saw the nine newborn pups inside. Auger noted that the puppies were less than a day old.

He further added that “Our vets have estimated that they were likely born the night before, making them less than 24 hours old when found.”

The SPCA shared the news to the Facebook page, and they were immediately overwhelmed by offers from the public to adopt the puppies. The SPCA was touched by all the supportive offers they received and shared that they would continue to update their followers on the puppies’ progress.

One of their updates was some good news – shortly after the puppies arrived at the shelter, they were paired with a dog named Nanook who ended up being their surrogate mom. They wrote, “She was so excited at the sight of them and has accepted them, and is feeding them well.”

Sadly, there was some bad news. The runt of the litter ended up passing away shortly after arriving at the shelter. But the rest of the puppies are doing very well under the care of Nanook.

The shelter added that the little family of eight and Nanook have settled into a foster home where they will be cared for until they are old enough to be adopted.

The most pressing thing that the shelter has shared is that they are looking for any information that might lead to finding the person who abandoned these sweet babies. In their appeal they wrote, “please get in touch on 06 345 3369 if you know anything.”

Hopefully whoever callously dumped these puppies will have to answer for their horrid actions. And hopefully the mom of the puppies can be found safely!
