Tall, dark and handsome are what many women want in a partner. Donatello is all of these things and more, but he has been overlooked for the past 4 years at Woodford Humane Society.

The adult pit bull arrived at the Kentucky shelter on May 13, 2019, and just passed his four-year anniversary making him the shelter’s longest resident. The sweet boy has watched nearly 1,200 dogs and puppies find homes and wonders when it will be his turn.

The shelter shared more about Donatello on their Facebook page in hopes that he would go viral and find his person. They wrote, “Donatello checks a lot of the boxes that make pets easily overlooked by adopters: he’s a large, black dog; he’s a mature adult; and he’s a pit bull. There’s got to be somebody out there who will see all the things that make him shine, instead: He’s perfectly house and crate trained. He’s a belly-rub connoisseur. He zooms for about 5 minutes at a time, then couch potatoes for hours. He loves kids (although we recommend older, harder to knock over ones, as he’s basically a perfect wrecking ball when he’s zooming). He’s endlessly patient with being dressed up for photo shoots. He’s pretty sure he’s a lap dog, scoot over on the couch so he can show you.”

While many people commented on what a handsome fella he is and how they prayed he would find a home soon, the shelter did not receive any calls – at first.

They took to the comments section themselves and posted, “He’s such a good dog, we can’t be the only ones who see that!”

Then his story went viral, and the calls started to come in.

Donatello needs to be an only pet because the shelter said, “He is a king, he knows it, and he will accept no pretenders to the throne.”

A common saying is to “not judge a book by its cover” and Donatello just asks that people give him a chance to show his playful, goofy personality. He is sure you will fall in love with him, and he will love you just as much, if not more, than a puppy.

Another of his amazing traits is his patience. He has been waiting for over four years and while he enjoys the love and attention from staff and volunteers, he really wants a family of his own.
