On April 25th, an eaglet’s life was put in danger, and it was caught on camera. One of the parents accidentally kicked the eaglet out of the nest while it was trying to fly out. The baby eagle landed under the nest — not knowing what was next and a bit unaware of what was happening. One day after the incident, a rescue team trekked the island to come and save the baby eagle.

Wildlife biologist Peter Sharpe and his team were monitoring the island — they formed a rescue group after seeing the footage. Apparently, the eaglet has a vital role in a program led by the Institute for Wildlife Studies. The team’s mission is to collect data that they can utilize to sustain biodiversity. The institute aims to help people understand animals even more — to provide knowledge on the importance of preventing animal extinction.

“They’re the result of a 40-year reintroduction program. So, there are only eight pairs of eagles on Catalina Island, and losing one chick can have a pretty big impact,” said Sharpe.

The eagle nest is on top of the cliffs of Catalina Island in Southern California. Explore runs the live nature cam, which documents the life of the bald eagles residing on the island. It was a critical rescue mission, and thankfully, the baby eagle was able to be brought back to the nest about a half-hour after crews found it.

Dr. Sharpe descended the cliff by rope and carefully placed the baby eagle inside a bag. Before he put the baby back on the nest, the team built nest rails with tree branches — to ensure that the accident won’t happen again. After that, Dr. Sharpe safely returned the baby to the nest. The parents returned home a few hours after the rescue operation.

“I just checked its legs and its wings to make sure there weren’t any obvious breaks. Internal injuries, I can’t say, but they’re pretty resilient,” said Sharpe. To see the full story, you can watch the video down below.
