Spencer, a 12-year-old therapy dog from Massachusetts, knows all about the importance of being a good sidekick.

That’s why the Golden Retriever shows up every year –rain for shine — to cheer for runners during the Boston marathon, whose 26.2 mile route feels less intimidating when there’s an adorable dog rooting for you from the sidelines.

Spencer’s cheering commitments have also earned him a measure of viral fame, according to CBS Boston.

In 2018, the dog went viral for inspiring runners by carrying a “Boston strong” flag. The following year, Spencer reportedly made headlines again for donning a raincoat to send positive vibes amid the pouring rain.

Both Spencer and his sister Penny planned to attend in 2020, but the Boston marathon was ultimately cancelled over coronavirus concerns.

This year’s race took place on Oct. 11, 2021, but a serious health scare almost forced Spencer to skip his favorite event for the second year running. According to Spencer’s owner, Rich Powers, the elderly pup was recently diagnosed with a 3.5-pound tumor.

Fortunately, Spencer survived his surgery, according to Powers, who described the dog’s recovery as a bit of a miracle. The dog’s recovery allowed Spencer and Penny to resume their usual marathon cheerleading spots between miles 2 and 3.

“The last 2 years We have all been through some challenges,” Powers wrote on Facebook, where he posted an adorable video of the Spencer getting ready for this year’s race. “We almost lost our Spencer last year and thought he would never be able to cheer the Boston marathon again.”

“Miracles do happen and he is with us today,” Powers continued. “It has been a long wait but Spencer is ready to see you all again. See you all Monday! We are Boston Strong.”
