Anyone can be a good Samaritan — your neighbor, the cashier at your local grocery store, your child’s teacher. These anonymous, kind souls put goodness into the world for the pure sake of doing what is right. With no intention of attracting attention or being given the credit they ‘deserve,’ these good Samaritans are all around us, looking out for the people and animals on this planet. These two stories look at a kitten and a puppy, both abandoned young with severe injuries, who would not have stood a chance had it not been for a good Samaritan.

Petra’s Story

Petra was found alone, dehydrated, and covered in motor oil in the middle of the highway by a good Samaritan. At only 2 months old, she was way too young to be out on her own, especially on a highway. She was brought to our local Animal Control and then came into our care where she received life-sustaining fluids and lots of love.

Once she had regained her strength and received her needed medical care, she was ready to find her forever. It didn’t take long for the sweet girl, and she was adopted about a month later by a family who had previously adopted a kitten from PAWS. However, her story doesn’t end there. A few years following her adoption, her forever mom came back wanting to open her home to a few foster kittens. Petra became a big foster sister, showing the ropes to PAWS kittens like she once was.

Hero’s Story

Hero’s story was only just beginning when he was found in a ditch by a good Samaritan. It was clear that this poor boy had a rough start to life at only 6 months old, but no one was sure how rough it truly was. He was found abandoned, with his ears bleeding, his head wrapped in duct tape, and binder clips and staples trying to mend everything back together.

He was taken into the care of PAWS of Hertford County and immediately received veterinary care to try and help evaluate the situation that the young pup was in. It was found that someone had tried to do an at-home crop job to his ears, leaving them continually bleeding and him needing to undergo multiple surgeries to repair the damage. After his stay at the vet’s, he went to a foster home where he continually received the care he needed to prevent infection and heal.

After a couple of months, he began to attend adoption events in hopes of finding his forever family. It didn’t take long for this happy, go-lucky boy to find his forever family with kid siblings to run around with.
