The other day I read something along the lines of plants are the new pets and pets are the new kids, and children are like exotic animals – you got to be a little rich and a little crazy to have them. And it’s so true.

For many millennials my age, pets are replacing children because they’re far less expensive to maintain. You’ll never have to sweat saving for a college fund when you’ve got a cat instead! And with that comes the rise in more proud pet parents taking to social media to show off their fur babies.

One of these examples is Angela Rasuse and her 15-year-old baby, Mackenzie, who is described as a kitty with a “resting grumpy face.”

But don’t let looks deceive you. As Angela has explained to The Dodo, “She can be the happiest cat in the world — like, thriving and having the best time, and she just has this grumpy look on her face.”

Angela shared that Mackenzie originally was her grandparents’ cat. Then, when her grandfather passed away in 2019, Angela got to take her in. Of course, there was a little bit of an adjustment period for Mackenzie.

In order to help her senior kitty get used to the new living arrangements, Angela went out and bought Mackenzie her own little harness and leash, and it turned her into a brand new cat!

Angela stated to The Dodo, “She loves being in the backyard and playing around. And, I took her to our cottage and we were playing on the beach and she absolutely loved it. It was the weirdest thing in the world. Here’s this grumpy, murdery cat, but the second you put a harness on her she becomes an adventure cat.”

With Mackenzie now loving her leash, Angela was able to take her pet most places with her. And for Mackenzie, her favorite place to go on an adventure was the local Pet Valu store in Nova Scotia, Canada. But just when Angela didn’t think her cat could love their pet store anymore, the holidays came – and with it a brand new opportunity.

The Pet Valu store announced that they would be hosting a fundraiser for their local food bank. Pet owners could bring in their pets to take a free picture with Santa so long as they brought along nonperishable food donations. Angela wasn’t quite sure how her kitty would react to a stranger in a red suit, but she decided to give it a try.

Well, much to her surprise, Mackenzie loved her visit with Santa! As Angela shared, “She trotted in like she owned the place and waited in line with all the other dogs. I put her beside Santa and she growled, because she didn’t know what was going on. But then she played with the ball on Santa’s hat, she sat in his lap.”

The cat mom even added, “The funniest part was when we were like, ‘OK Mackenzie, you’ve had your turn. We’ve got the pictures, it’s time for the next animal.’ She hissed at me when I tried to take her away from Santa. I don’t know if Santa reminded her of my grandfather or what, but she absolutely loved Santa.”

Inspired by the adoption of Mackenzie, Angela started the nonprofit My Grandfather’s Cat to help seniors and terminally ill people find placements for their animals after they’re gone.
