The Wyandotte Police Department, animal control, and Wyandotte Fire Department worked together to rescue a Labradoodle who had gotten loose from her owner while on a walk and ended up jumping into the freezing Detroit River.

The recently adopted pup, named Lucy, managed to climb onto a chunk of floating ice, but it was drifting away in the river, preventing the dog from getting to shore. The water was also freezing, and if the dog stayed out there any longer, she could have suffered from hypothermia.

When rescuers arrived, they discovered the frightened dog, lying on the ice with her whole body soaking wet. They were able to move the chunk of ice closer to the riverbank. A fireman stood on a slippery ladder that was submerged in the river, while his colleagues held onto him with a rope.

The fireman was thankfully able to carefully grip Lucy around her neck using a catch pole. As soon as she was within arm’s reach, the other rescuers were able to pull her out of the river to safety.

They immediately warmed Lucy up, and she was happily reunited with her worried owner. She was also examined by a vet, where she was deemed okay, all thanks to the efforts from police, animal control, and the fire department!

It’s safe to say that Lucy will be spending her days wrapped up in a blanket, keeping warm in her house with her new family.
