A father and daughter on their first trip to Yellowstone witnessed one of the rarest animals crossing the road.

Yellowstone Insight, an eco tour agency, provides year-round private tours of the park, but a recent animal encounter shocked the guide and guests equally.

Carl Kemp and his daughter Maya headed out to take in the beauty of Yellowstone with MacNeal Lyons, owner of the tour agency, as their guide.

As soon as they entered the park, they started to see wild animals pointed out by Lyons, including wolves, bison, and rare songbirds.

But they never expected to see the most elusive animal in the park – the wolverine.

Only six or seven live in the park and are rarely even seen on wildlife cameras.

Yellowstone Insights posted, “About 11:38 a.m. yesterday we rounded the corner heading westbound and in the on coming lane was a low-to-the-ground, dark animal loping away from us. My guest said out loud, exactly what I was thinking, “Is that a bear?”… For a hot second, we both thought that it might be a young black bear moving away from us, but as it turned and looked over its right shoulder towards us – there was no mistaking that the animal was indeed, a Wolverine!”

Kemp and his daughter couldn’t believe their eyes. “It was really magical to see,” Maya told KTVQ. “Dad said that it was like the unicorn of Yellowstone. It was insane.”

The wolverine stopped in the road and stared back at the vehicle. Thankfully, Lyons was prepared with a camera and took several amazing photos that were shared on their Facebook page.

The encounter only lasted about three minutes, but it will be a moment they will never forget.

Kemp shared the experience on Facebook and wrote, “I never even dreamed it was possible. Their range is typically more northern and the only creature more elusive than them is Sasquatch.”

The photos are going viral as everyone would love to catch a glimpse of the rare animal.

One admirer wrote, “Those are some amazing shots. You are blessed to even see one, much less have a camera with you so we can see it. Thanks for sharing your good fortune!”
