Large dogs spend more time at a shelter compared to small dogs, so shelters have to come up with ways to encourage people to adopt the bigger dogs.

A Florida animal shelter hopes to find homes for many of their large dogs by making them “free” for three days.

Jacksonville Humane Society (JHS) is at max capacity with dozens of big dogs patiently waiting for someone to choose them. The shelter decided to waive the $50 adoption fee for their adult dogs over 30 pounds to encourage people to adopt.

“We like big mutts and we cannot lie! All large dogs (30 pounds and up) will be free to adopt at two different locations in Jacksonville from 1/27 to 1/30. Additional fees such as the city rabies licensing fee and a leash and collar may apply,” posted the shelter on Facebook.

Say hello to Coco. This sweetheart loves belly rubs and will do anything for a tasty treat. The 5-year-old pup enjoys long walks and cuddling. However, she wants all of your attention and must be the only pet.

Coco: likes snacks, walks, and pets (also super smart – probably a Ravenclaw)

Most dogs find shelter life stressful and are unable to show off their amazing personality. That is why it is so important for the dogs to get out of the shelter and relax so they can show off just how special they are. Locals and visitors are encouraged to take an adoptable dog out for a day of fun through the JHS’s Dog Day Out program.

The shelter provides everything you need. Learn more here.

Please consider adopting an overlooked shelter dog. Big dogs have big hearts and just want someone to love. Adopt don’t shop!
