Animal Care Officers in San Antonio, Texas, are being hailed as heroes for saving a dog trapped in a storm drain.
Officers posted photos of the rescue on Facebook and jokingly wrote, “We get it…storm drains can be a little scary (thanks Pennywise!). Most everyone avoids them but not Jupiter.”
The large dog named Jupiter somehow wiggled her way into a sewer drain but was unable to get out. She wandered away from her home and her concerned family was looking everywhere for her.
A woman out walking with her son saw the dog and realized she was stuck. As luck would have it, Animal Care Officer Sewell was nearby on another call and was flagged down to help.
“As Officer Sewell approached the drain, Jupiter popped out her part of her head from the tight concrete opening. She seemed alert and friendly, but (understandably) not thrilled about her predicament,” posted City of San Antonio Animal Care Services.
The trapped dog cried out for help which captured the attention of Officer Sewell and two curious cats. The nosy felines made their way over to see what all the commotion was about.
Officers DeLaCruz, Garcia, and Cadet Prescott arrived to assist in the rescue. Residents in the area (including the two cats) gathered around to watch.
ACS shared, “Once the heavy cover was removed, Officer Sewell and DeLaCruz were able to shimmy into the eerie maintenance hole to properly harness a rope around Jupiter so she could be pulled to safety. This big girl was so patient while our officers got her ready to be lifted out of the drain!”
Jupiter was finally freed and examined by a veterinarian. She was in good health and reunited with her family later that afternoon.
ACS concluded the post by thanking everyone involved. “Three cheers for our brave officers who always go above and beyond (and under if need be!) to help pets in need!”
