With winter weather in full swing, it can be tempting to spend all day cuddled up on the couch with a good book. Getting outside and getting fresh air can feel amazing, but it can be hard to muster up the courage to venture out. That is, unless you have a dog.

Those with dogs still have to take their pets out for exercise and potty walks, regardless of what the weather brings.

While heavy storms might mean shorter walks or even brief potty breaks in the yard, lighter winter weather can be the perfect time to stretch your legs and take your dog out for a walk.

If you’re a dog walker in the UK, however, you may want to pay special attention to where you’re walking your pooch to avoid getting a hefty fine.

In the UK, they have Public Spaces Protection Orders (PSPO) to stop dogs from entering those areas. PSPOs will be marked with a sign and those who violate the area by walking a dog through it can be fined up to £1,000 ($1,128.67).

Beyond ensuring you are walking on a proper route or path with your pooch, it’s also important to be mindful of how cold it is outside. Despite being covered in fur, dogs can get cold just like humans!

Timing your walks can be helpful to ensure you and your pet won’t stay out in the weather for too long, but you can also use your pet’s individual cues to gauge how they’re doing with the weather. Some pets enjoy being in cold weather more than others and if your pet is uncomfortable, it’s ok to shorten your walks when needed.
