When tornadoes flattened her home in Mayfield, Kentucky, Molly Hughes was at work, which saved her from the deadly storms.
But Molly’s beloved dog, Sally, wasn’t so lucky. While Hughes worked her shift at a nearby Waffle House, her dog waited at home, which lay directly in the tornadoes’ path.
“My first thought was ‘I have to get to my dog,’” Molly told WPSD Local 6. “I kept thinking ‘I have to get my dog out.’
Molly jumped in her truck and raced back to Sally, only to find the streets blocked by broken trees and downed telephone poles. So she parked her truck and began running, only to find her house “totally destroyed.”
“When I got here, I lost it because the house was gone, I thought the dog was gone,” Molly told the station. “I just started screaming her name.”
But as Molly cried out for her dog, a surprising thing happened. Sally ran out of the wreckage to comfort her distraught human, reassuringly wagging her tail. “She met me unharmed at the front door,” the dog’s shocked owner said, “like I’m here, I’m still here, mamma, it’s okay.”
Nobody knows how Sally survived, because tornadoes flattened much of this neighborhood. But many people and pets haven’t been as lucky, which is why GreaterGood is racing to help other tornado victims.
