Kentucky Humane Society (KHS) posted a plea for help on Facebook for a five-month-old puppy who arrived with broken front paws.

The sweet pup named MacGregor was rescued from an overcrowded shelter in desperate need of medical attention.

“This poor boy suffered blunt force trauma to his front paws that resulted in broken metacarpal bones in both his right and his left paws. These are very unusual injuries and we do not know what may have caused them, but we are determined to help him,” wrote the shelter.

MacGregor was seen by a specialist who said his broken bones could be mended with surgery.

“This is a major surgery that requires a lot of resources, and KHS’ minimum quote for the surgery is $5,000. This surgery is more than KHS’ monthly budget for offsite veterinary care, but we believe MacGregor is worth saving.”

In the short time he has been at the shelter he has already “stolen” the hearts of the staff and volunteers. “Despite the pain he is in, he has the best personality and loves giving kisses to all of the staff and volunteers who visit with him,” KHS said.

Thanks to generous donations, MacGregor was scheduled to have surgery on November 11. However, a miracle occurred.

Radiographs taken right before surgery showed that the pup’s bones were mending on their own!

“When an animal is very young and the bones are still growing, sometimes they can be splinted well enough where the limbs will begin to straighten themselves out as they grow,” explained the shelter.

The veterinarian decided to hold off on surgery and instead put his front legs in casts. MacGregor is on restricted activity, which means no jumping or running, and will be reexamined in four weeks.

The shelter said in an update post, “If all goes well and his limbs continue to heal on their own, he will hopefully not need the surgery!”

KHS thanked everyone for their support and concern for MacGregor and promised to post updates as he heals. They also reassured people who donated that the money will go to care for MacGregor and other shelter pets in need of medical care.

“Every week, we take in animals who are injured, ill or recovering from abuse or neglect. Many never receive the attention that MacGregor has, but they are just as deserving of second chances. Thank you to everyone who chooses to help our animals! You are angels!”
