2020 was a year of hardship and sacrifice for many. The loss of community events meant that it was also a year of isolation.
For the runners who look forward to the yearly Boston Marathon, which was canceled last year, it meant that not only did they miss out on the camaraderie and physical endurance of the event, but also the smiling face of Spencer, the Golden Retriever.
Since 2018, the pup has sat by the side of the marathon’s route and encouraged runners with his cheery demeanor and “Boston Strong” flag dangling from his mouth.
“He gave me as well as all the other runners so much joy and strength. There he was, wearing that adorable raincoat and holding the flags wildly flapping, braving the elements. Thank you so much for the inspiration,” wrote 2018 runner Nozomi Shinoda-Wade on Facebook.

2020 brought unique challenges even for Spencer, however. That year, he underwent surgery to remove a 3.5-pound tumor that left him fighting for his life. However, his owner Rich Powers noted that not only did he pull through, he was well enough to cheer on the 2021 marathon!
The postponed 2021 Boston Marathon was moved from the spring to the fall. In a Facebook video, Powers wrote a series of signs that the senior pup held in his mouth, saying:
“It’s been 2 ½ years. We’ve been through a lot. We’ve missed you all. We’re ready to see you again. Welcome back runners.”
True to his word, Spencer returned to cheer the runners on!
He was even joined by Penny, a fellow senior pup who did her best as a “flag warmer,” lying on the sidelines to watch the stream of runners.
“It was great to see you all and best of luck at the finish line and beyond,” Powers wrote on Instagram after the race.
For the runners who braved delays, rough weather, and the challenge of a marathon, the sight of Spencer was the perfect pick-me-up.
