Oct. 29 is much more than just the end of October. It’s also National Cat Day–the perfect excuse to pamper the special feline in your life!
Founded in 2005, National Cat Day is also an excellent reason to spread the word about the shelter cats. According to the ASPCA, approximately 3.2 million cats enter U.S. animal shelters each year. Many of those cats will be euthanized if they don’t find a forever home.
National Cat Day–celebrated on Oct. 29 every year–provides us with an opportunity to help. Read on for 5 ways to support and celebrate these incredible animals on National Cat Day and every day of the year.
1. Adopt or Foster a Shelter Cat
If you’ve ever considered adopting a shelter cat, Oct. 29 is the perfect time to do it. Many shelters are teeming with adoptable felines, and black cats–whose supposedly “unlucky” status makes them less likely to be adopted–-are especially desperate for somebody to give them a chance.
If you can’t adopt a cat, fostering is the next best thing, especially following a pandemic and “kitten season” that’s left shelters drowning in strays.
2. Debunk Dangerous Cat Myths
Not only do dangerous myths make black cats less likely to be adopted, they sadly increase their odds of being euthanized. This danger further increases around Halloween, when black cats are tortured, kidnapped, and killed by superstitious abusers.
Make sure to keep cats (of any color) inside over Halloween weekend, and take the Black Cat Pledge to help us counter discrimination and debunk dangerous cat myths online.
3. Make a Donation to Help Shelter Cats
If you can’t adopt or foster a cat, don’t fret. There are still plenty of ways to help shelter cats on National Cat Day. A $10 donation can help us feed shelter cats, spay or neuter animals, or donate toys and shelter supplies, including cat castles that help shelter cats feel safe.
You can even make a donation to help us train shelter cats to be friendly around people, thus increasing their chances of adoption.

4. Support Feral Cats With TNR
Of course, millions of cats aren’t even able to make it into a shelter, making National Cat Day about feral felines, too. One of the best ways to help community cats is by supporting Trap-Neuter-Return, which is a humane way to control feral cat populations. Find out more about TNR and consider making a donation to support GreaterGood’s TNR efforts.
