Lewis the greyhound is one lucky dog!

Born and raised in Victoria, Australia, the pup overcame his hard years in the country’s notorious and exploitative greyhound racing circuit, before being rescued by Greyt Greys Rescue.

Originally, Lewis’ mom was concerned that he would need to fly in the cargo hold, apart from her, because he isn’t a service dog. But because the flight was fairly empty, the staff decided to make an exception.

“Amazingly, Lewis was able to fly in the cabin with her,” the Grey Greys team wrote on Facebook. “They let Lewis fly in the cabin, as the flight was almost empty. Lewis made himself at home and was fine for the flights! No crying and no accidents. The flight crew said he was the best dog they’ve EVER had including fully trained service dogs.”

And it wasn’t just Lewis’ adoption that they celebrated on that international flight. It was also Lewis’ birthday! Now a senior citizen, he enjoyed his special day in style with dog-friendly baked goods and a little banner.

“Lewis celebrated his birthday on the plane and was totally spoiled by the staff,” his fosters wrote on Facebook.

Though it’s always bittersweet for the team to see one of their fosters leave the nest, they were overwhelmingly happy for Lewis and the bright future ahead of him in “retirement.”
