Pets have a way of making us smile every day, no matter how bad a day we may have had.

To honor our adorable pets, Comedy Pet Photography Awards holds an annual competition where people from around the world submit photos of their pets in hilarious poses.

The rules are simple – no clothes, accessories, or photoshopping. After you have chosen an image, simply submit your photo with caption into one of the seven categories.

This year’s categories are as follows:

DOGS: Our Best Friends
CATS: Our Fabulous Feline Friends
The Mighty Horse
All Other Creatures Great and Small
Pets who look like their owners
Junior (for kid photographers)
Awesome Video Clip of Your Pet

After reviewing all the submissions, the judges (made up of animal experts, veterinarian, photographers, and pet owners) have chosen the 40 finalists for this year.

Everything from a laughing horse to chicks afraid of their own shadows have made the list. Of course, there are numerous photobombing dogs and cats and even a flock of sheep in the mix.

The finalists are all vying for the titles of “Award Winning Pet” and “Award Winning Photographer” and an overall grand cash prize of $2,000. Each category winner will also receive a bag of goodies and a certificate to hang on their wall.

Check out all the finalists here.

But all joking aside, the mission of the competition is to “promote positive awareness of animal welfare issues and celebrate the incredible and valuable contribution that pets can and do have on our lives.”

Every year, a small “grass-roots organization” is chosen as the featured charity and this year’s is Animal Support Angels.

The winners will be announced in November, so follow them on Facebook and Twitter for more updates. If you missed out on entering this year, no worries, you can start snapping shots now for next year’s competition.
