Every year, thousands of perfectly adoptable shelter pets die in Louisiana, where chronically overcrowded, underfunded shelters are often forced to resort to euthanasia. This tragic dilemma puts heartworm-positive dogs at particularly high risk, especially in shelters without the resources to treat this deadly (but curable) disease.

This tragic fate awaited Sammy, a Louisiana dog surrendered to the shelter when his family moved away. But even though Sammy was a very good boy and eager to find his new home, the rescued dog had heartworm disease, making Sammy more likely to be euthanized than find a new home.

Thankfully, Sammy’s fortunes changed when he landed a spot on one of our Flights to Freedom, which are conducted by Greater Good Charities, The Animal Rescue Site, Freekibble, and operated by Greater Good’s Good Flights program.

On June 18 and 19, Sammy will join more than 100 lucky shelter pet passengers flying from Louisiana to Florida and Michigan, both regions where shelter dogs and cats are adopted in days.

Geneva, Concert, Rose, Honey, and Lillian will also be traveling aboard June’s rescue flights, which provide a second chance for needy animals who faced uncertain futures down South, where dogs and cats outweigh the number of people willing to give them homes.

But Flights to Freedom can’t take off without your support. Just $5 will help us fund 125 air miles for an at-risk shelter pet traveling June’s Flights to Freedom, while larger donations let us fly even more dogs and cats to safety. Your lifesaving donation will be matched dollar for dollar, up to $35,000, thanks to PEDIGREE Foundation and Mars Petcare.

Thanks for helping us give at-risk shelter pets like Sammy, Lilliana, Geneva, Concert, Rose, and Honey a second chance at life!
