There is a tragic trail of inhumanity running across the globe.

It begins with dogs and cats being bred in farms, or stolen off the streets in China, Thailand, the Philippines and other Southeast Asian regions,

According to the Winnipeg Humane Society, “Most of the animals are killed by being strung up by their hind legs or neck with a thin metal wire. A worker then stabs them in the groin or stomach and waits for them to bleed to death. Some farms or factories will bludgeon animals to death, suffocate them, or use a hose to pour water down their throats until they drown. More often than not, other tightly confined animals are forced to watch and wait.”

Canada’s trade restrictions do not prohibit the import of dog and cat fur.

The pelts are then being imported to Canada and sold next to seal skin goods without any indication of where the fur is from.

As the Toronto Star reports, the Canadian government has meanwhile held off efforts to ban the import of products made with dog and cat fur because they believe such a ban would make it harder to sell products from Canada made from the brutal and unwarranted slaughter of baby seals.

The UK actually prompted the European Union ban on the import of commercial seal products in response to the brutal slaughter the industry has been fueled by. The import of domestic dog and cat fur is also banned in the UK, EU and the United States for the same reasons.

The World Trade Organization allows trade exclusions to promote animal welfare. That means that Canada can easily and without repercussion ban the importation of these items. Instead, with no ban and no legislation requiring the content of fur garments to be disclosed on the label, they prefer to allow Canadian consumers to unknowingly purchase imported products made from the skins of cats and dogs.

A majority of Canadians are against the killing of dogs and cats for fur.

Canadian opinion and opinion worldwide are in agreement that the trade in dog and cat fur is unconscionable, Humane Society International reports.
