Two NYC Department of Sanitation workers, William Montero and John Kase, were working their usual route through Queens when they came across a complete and total shock.

The two sanitation workers were busy loading garbage bags onto their truck when they heard a faint little meow. At first, Montero thought it might just be a toy, but upon further inspection, it was revealed to be a little 10-week-old kitten pleading for help.

The little kitten, who had been in a sealed garbage bag, was understandably frightened when Montero and Kase pulled him out. The two searched the other bags for more kittens, but they couldn’t find any others.

Montero, who has 18 years of experience in the field of sanitation work, was completely appalled by the discovery. According to Bored Panda, he said, “Who would do this? Putting the cat in the bag… There are so many different outlets to get to help a cat with a better life than to put it in a bag and tie it up and tape around the top. I can’t help but think it was intentional.”

After getting the kitten out of the trash, Montero and Kase decided to come up with a name for him. They were torn between calling him Rusty or Hopper – after the nickname for the back of the garbage truck – and they ultimately settled on Hopper, as Daily News reported.

Kase removed a piece of gunk from Hopper’s eyes and then placed him against his chest to help soothe the frightened feline. Montero and Kase then called up their supervisor and requested that he take them to the vet so they could finish up their route.

Hopper was then transported to a local vet who estimated that he was about 10 weeks old. The poor kitten was suffering from both an eye and an upper respiratory infection.

Hopper was later released to the care of Noah’s Ark Animal Rescue who placed him in the care of a foster family while he recovered and they searched for a forever home for him.

Montero and Kase very kindly bought him a brand new cat bed along with a few supplies as their parting gift to the adorable little kitten.

The founder of Noah’s Ark Animal Rescue, Denise Hock, stated to Daily News, “People are just disgusting. What would go through someone’s mind to tie a cat in a bag and kill it? If you don’t want it, call someone. Take it to a precinct. There are so many shelters. It makes no sense why someone would do something so horrible.”
