We’ve seen dogs rescue people. People rescue dogs. Now we’re applauding a rescued dog from Johannesburg who saved her smaller dog brother from drowning in the family pool.
According to their owners, Jessie and Chucky are trained not to go in the water without them, and these very good pups never break the rules. But accidents happen, which is how little Chucky fell into the pool when his owners weren’t home. Nor was the toy Pomeranian able to climb back out of the water. A surveillance video captured the drowning dog frantically paddling and gasping for air.
Fortunately, Chucky’s younger (and bigger) dog sister, Jessie, rushed to help her older (but smaller) dog brother. The video shows the 7-year-old Staffie frantically circling the pool and trying to pull Chucky out of the water by the nape of his neck. But by this time, little Chucky was thoroughly soaked, making it difficult for Jessie to get a good grip.
Of course, Jessie refused to give up – because she’s a loyal dog. After 34 minutes, Jessie finally succeeded pulled Chucky out of the pool. The pair quickly ran back into the house (ie to safety) to wait for their humans to return.
When the dogs’ owners, Byron and Melissa, got home, they puzzled about why Chucky was partially wet. “We tried to look for clues as to where he could have wet his head. We thought maybe he dipped his head in the water, but there was no mess in the house to support this suggestion,” Byron told South Africa’s TimesLIVE.

The mystery led the couple to check their security camera, which detailed all 34 minutes of Jessie’s heroic rescue. “It was heart-wrenching to watch. We still struggle to watch that video today, just thinking of what could have happened if Jessie was not there,” said Byron, who will be getting a pool cover ASAP.
(Before you start judging… we are getting the pool covered!) I can’t believe she did this! It broke our hearts to see this happen when we looked at the security footage. Melissa Thanarayen

Incredibly, this very good girl–whom Byron and Melissa adopted 4 years ago from a local shelter–was once considered a difficult dog. “They said she didn’t get along with their other dogs, but I have not experienced this,” said Byron, who called Jessie caring, loving, and “the best dog” they’ve ever had. “She got along with our other two dogs from the word go.”
“I’m really proud of her, considering she is the youngest,” Bryon said.
We’re also proud of Jessie. What a good girl! Rescues really are the best.
