What do you get when you release 70 zebra finches into a room full of amplified guitars?
A very unique and noteworthy sound experience.
That is exactly the kind of sound project that French artist Céleste Boursier-Mougenot had in mind when he became inspired after looking out his window one day to the birds perched on a wire.
Boursier-Mougenot had seen the birds on the wire and thought to himself what that would be like to make music.

That prompted him to begin envisioning his project. And, 30 years later, it has become a fully realized experience.
Boursier-Mougenot called his sound project “From Here to Ear.” It has been featured in different museums around the world, and in many forms, since he first thought of it back in 1999.
Boursier-Mougenot uses amplified guitars because the strings on the instruments are no different from how birds look when perched atop the wires of telephone poles.
However, unlike regular telephone poles, when the birds land on the strings of the guitars, their movements end up emitting a form of music. It becomes like an ambient sound the more birds and guitars there are. It is pretty cool and certainly shows that you can find inspiration from anywhere in nature.
