A Human and Animal Partnership Served As A Beacon of Hope
A Kyle family recently faced a devastating house fire, leaving them heartbroken and worried for their beloved pets. But amidst this great loss, a flicker of hope emerged. Thanks to an incredible partnership between The American Red Cross of Central & South Texas and Austin Pets Alive! (APA!), they were able to find comfort and care during a difficult time.
The family and their five dogs—Sadie, Dirk, Harlee, Hobbs, and Koda—miraculously made it out unharmed but needed a safe place to go. The Red Cross disaster response team sprang into action and connected with APA!’s Positive Alternatives to Shelter Surrender (P.A.S.S.) program. Lucy Fernandez, P.A.S.S. Program Manager for APA! and the Hays County Pet Resource Center quickly worked to secure temporary housing for the pets.
This situation highlights why our partnership with the American Red Cross is crucial for families. During times of crisis, pet owners shouldn’t have to worry about the safety of their companions.
Though their home was lost, the love that bound this family remained unbroken. With unwavering support provided by both teams, temporary homes were found for all five pups, giving this family the peace of mind needed to heal. Their two cats, Presley and Elsa, were also welcomed into new homes to care for them.
The Red Cross and P.A.S.S. work together to help pets and people affected by disaster and ensure families are provided with the resources they need for recovery and rebuilding.
“We’re grateful for this partnership and for the affected family’s safety, including their pets,” said Anthony Triola, Disaster Program Manager for the Red Cross Central Texas Chapter. “In a home fire, every second counts—just two minutes could be all you have to escape. We strongly urge families to practice their escape plans regularly, ensuring their beloved pets are included as well.”
The American Red Cross and Austin Pets Alive! are committed to providing compassionate care for families and their pets during emergencies. This partnership ensures that no one has to face a crisis alone. Read more about this lifesaving partnership.
