The holiday season is all about giving to those in need, and Chesterfield, Virginia, Police Chief, Col. Jeffrey S. Katz, is helping shelter dogs in need.

A few years ago, Katz impersonated Santa for a fundraising event for Chesterfield County Animal Services, but this year decided to help shelter pets in a different way.

Chesterfield County Animal Services has found homes for nearly all of their homeless dogs and cats, with just three dogs remaining – Sugarplum, Claus and Holly.

Sugarplum is a 4-year-old hound mix that is “the life of the party.” The energetic girl needs an active family who will take her for long walks and play fetch. She’s an expert escape artist so a tall fence is a must.

Claus is a 2-year-old pit bull mix that is still figuring out how to play with toys. He adores people but does not play well with other dogs, so he needs to be an only pet.

Holly is a sweet 4-year-old pit bull looking for a family to spoil her as their only dog. Head scratches and belly rubs are her favorite. She travels well and doesn’t mind being in a crate.

The shelter wrote, “we just know there are 3 families out there for them!”

Upon hearing there were three dogs still looking for homes, Katz stepped up and offered to pay the adoption fees for the remaining dogs.

“Now, let’s get those three pets adopted! I want to get these three precious animals into a loving and warm home before Christmas – so here’s the offer: Adopt a pet before 12.24.20, and I’ll personally pay your adoption fee,” he posted on Facebook.

The shelter shared the good news with their followers in a post of their own. “Our Colonel has spoken… And it’s awesome news for you all!! Now thru Wednesday, Chesterfield County Police ‘s Colonel Katz will personally pay your adoption fee 🥰❣️. How awesome is that!?”

They went on to say, “Adopt and you will receive a lifetime of love and companionship in return. All of our dogs are spayed/neutered, fully vaccinated, microchipped, and heartworm tested.”

Katz asked people to share the post so all the dogs can spend the holidays in a loving home. “PLEASE SHARE and let’s end this crazy dumpster fire of a year on a high note – with an EMPTY SHELTER!”
