Jon Stewart, host of The Daily Show, broke down in tears when he shared with his audience that his beloved dog, Dipper, had passed away.
The three-legged dog was adopted by the Stewart family roughly 12 years ago when they went to Animal Haven in New York City to raise funds for the shelter. Stewart shared how he went with his two kids to sell cupcakes to raise money and the shelter team brought out a one-year-old “brindle pit bull” who had lost his front right leg after being hit by a car in Brooklyn.
It was love at first sight as the dog climbed into Stewart’s lap and went home with him that same day. They named him Dipper and he remained by Stewart’s side ever since. He even went to work on set of The Daily Show and is considered one of the “OG Daily Show dog crew”.
While Dipper patiently waited for the show to be taped, he met, “actors and authors and presidents and kings”.
It is clear how much Dipper was loved, and he will be greatly missed. “In a world of good boys, he was the best,” shared his dad. Stewart said with tears in his eyes that the entire family was with their beloved dog when he passed. “He was ready. He was tired. But I wasn’t.”
Saying goodbye to a beloved pet is one of the hardest things we must go through. They bring so much joy and laughter and are always there for us when we need a shoulder to cry on or to listen when we need to vent about a bad day.
Stewart hopes that everyone will find that special dog at the shelter that will change your life forever. He ended the show with a video of Dipper playing in the snow for “Your Moment of Zen”.

Animal Haven also shared that they are mourning the loss of Dipper. They remember the bake sale and the “magical” moment when Dipper and Jon met. They wrote on Facebook, “They were immediately drawn to each other and inseparable. It really was magic and quickly became obvious that Jon wasn’t going to leave without Dipper.”
They went on to say, “Dipper lives on now in our hearts and minds as a powerful reminder of the importance of pet adoption and the love that an animal can bring into your life. So here’s to the best boy ever – Dipper. We love you, miss you, and will never forget you.”
