A senior black Labrador retriever receives the best Christmas gift ever – a forever home.
Animal Friends, an animal shelter in Pittsburgh, took in a black Labrador retriever named Capone over three years ago who learned “good things come to those who wait.”
Capone spent 1,134 days in the shelter waiting for someone to pick him. The smart and well-mannered boy was showered with love by the staff but deserved to spend his golden years in a loving home.
Multiple interested people came forward throughout the years, but for one reason or another the adoption fell through. Capone needed to be the only pet in a home with a fenced in yard.
Black and senior dogs are sadly overlooked at shelters, but add in no pets and a fence and the potential adopters are few and far between. The shelter often posted Capone’s adorable face on Facebook hoping to find his perfect match.
And they did.
A family recently took Capone in as a foster to get him out of the stressful shelter environment, but quickly fell in love with the old guy. While his hearing and sight have started to go, he still gets around fine and easily finds treats with his powerful snout.
He is a young 10-year-old who still enjoys walks and enrichment games. The family decided to make it official and adopted Capone to the delight of the shelter staff. The shelter announced the exciting news by saying, “They say good things come to those who wait … and that couldn’t be more true for our sweet Capone who FINALLY found his new family yesterday. Capone, our longest-term resident, has been with us since November 2017. And, we couldn’t be more thrilled to announce that yesterday, his foster family made it official and adopted this handsome boy!”
Capone has hundreds of fans who have been following his journey and are elated that he has finally found his forever home.

One person commented, “2020 is saved!!!!! So, so happy for our buddy Capone!!! I hope he gets to snuggle in bed until noon each day, gets all the treats and bum scratches a good boy could hope for! He deserves all the most amazing things to come his way! Thank you to his new mom and dad for giving him a home!!”
Since so many people have fallen in love with Capone, the shelter posted a video “celebrating the happy memories we shared with Capone over the past three years.”
Shelter staff and volunteers couldn’t be happier and said, “Happy Tails Capone! We’re so glad that you have a family of your own and a home for the holidays.”
