In 2008, I had two lovable kitties – Mallory (a Maine Coon mix) and Chloe (an elderly tabby). Mallory was a playful girl and much younger than Chloe, who passed away in 2010 at age 18. When Chloe was still alive, Mallory desperately needed a kitty playmate since elderly Chloe was far beyond her playful years at the time.

My buddy and roomie at the time, Will, went to the SPCA with me and asked me how I’d know which cat was “the one,” and I answered, “I’ll know.”

At the shelter, we noticed a fluffy furball named Tessie. We sat in the kitty room to get acquainted, and to my initial sadness, Tessie was not interested in me at all, but I wasn’t sad for long. I heard a sweet meow and turned to look behind me.

A tabby cat stepped out of the kitty condo and walked right up to me. The first thing I noticed about him were his gorgeous green eyes. The second thing I noted was his sweetness. I picked him up, and the first thing he did was wrap his “arms” around my neck in a hug and lick my face. He started to purr, and I fell in love. This little boy tabby had captured my heart in an instant, and I knew he was the one.

Like Mallory, I named him after a Mount Everest climber – Phurba Tashi. Phurba has been a sweet companion and the quintessential bratty, yet lovable brother for Mallory. While Phurba has some odd habits and some health issues – asthma, a decreased sense of smell, some absentmindedness, and a compulsion to lick tables and pillows, he is my loving, sweet, adorable, and playful kitty boy, and I love him with all my heart and will cater to his every need.

When I moved to Maui in 2011 with my longtime boyfriend Anthony, there was no question that the cats would come along. They flew thousands of miles with us, and years later, they are still our happy hula kitties.
