San Diego Humane Society has taken in tens of thousands of companion and wild animals. Some arrived with names while others were named by staff and volunteers.
Even though there are countless pet names, there are some names that continually appear. There are even several shelter pets with the same name. San Diego Humane Society revealed the most popular shelter pet names of 2023 on Instagram.
Take a look at the lists and see if your rescued pet’s name made the list. Even if it didn’t, you are sure to know a pet or two with one of the names below.

There are two shepherd mix dogs available for adoption at the shelter and both are named Max. One is a senior fella hoping to win the heart of someone with his sweet eyes and wagging tail.

A 9-year-old pit bull mix and a 3-year-old guinea pig are both named Zeus and would love to find their special someone.

Luna is such a popular name that there are three dogs and two cats with some form of Luna in their name waiting to be adopted. Two are Siberian husky mix and a German shepherd mix are hoping the stars align and they are adopted soon.
The 4-year-old black cat with the same name loves to snuggle with adults and isn’t afraid to ask for attention. A curious and energetic 9-week-old kitten named Stellaluna is sure to entertain her new family with her playful antics.
This has been a tough year for the shelter as they have seen a 30% increase in dog intakes and currently have 580 dogs waiting for a home. They shared, “175 of those dogs have been with us for more than 50 days. We’re also averaging 137 puppies in care per day, another all-time record.”
The goal is to find each animal a loving home. The shelter has lowered adoption fees for adult dogs to just $24 and waived adoption fees on all pets for active military members and veterans through the end of the year. Overlooked pets are hoping to ring in 2024 with a family of their own.
