In a remarkable tale of interspecies friendship and heroism, Daisy, a Springer Spaniel, played a crucial role in the rescue of a cat in Cornwall, England.
Mowgli, who had been missing for six days, was discovered 100 feet down a mineshaft, thanks to Daisy’s persistent efforts.
“Daisy and Mowgli are pretty good mates so she could probably tell he was down there,” Rose’s son, Hamish, told The Independent.
The Desperate Search
Michele Rose, Mowgli’s owner, was close to losing hope after days of fruitless searching for her missing pet. However, Daisy’s unusual behavior near the woods of their Cornwall home caught her attention.
As Global News reports, the dog’s insistent running back and forth between the mineshaft and owner Michele Rose was a clear sign something was amiss.
Mowgli’s Plight
Mowgli, a young cat, had fallen into an old mineshaft behind the Rose family’s field. This perilous situation was unknown until Daisy’s discovery.
The family, including their other cat, Baloo, had been anxiously waiting for Mowgli’s return, reports the BBC.
Team Effort for the Rescue
The RSPCA and Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service played a significant role in this successful rescue.
Due to the darkness, the initial attempt had to be postponed, but the team, led by RSPCA officer Stephen Findlow, returned the next morning with ropes and a cat cage to safely retrieve Mowgli, the BBC reports.
Mowgli’s Condition and Recovery
Miraculously, Mowgli was found uninjured despite his harrowing ordeal. He was given a thorough check-up by vets and treated to his favorite comforts – cuddles on the sofa and lots of chicken, reports Yahoo! News.
“Without Daisy doing that Mowgli could still be down there, that’s for sure. She was persistent in making me follow her, it was amazing. Daisy is a superstar. She’s an amazing dog,” Rose told the BBC.
Daisy’s Recognition
Daisy, already a beloved family member, earned extra praise and treats for her heroic actions. Her bond with Mowgli exemplifies the unique and often underestimated friendships that can exist between dogs and cats.
While heartwarming, this story also shows the importance of being vigilant about the safety hazards in rural and historic areas.
As the RSPCA wrote in a Facebook post, ” If you find a trapped animal, please do not attempt dangerous rescues yourself.”
