When Peanut Butter and Jelly first arrived at Sonoma County Animal Services as strays, they immediately caught the attention of everyone who laid eyes on them.

The shelter staff was stunned and bewildered. These senior dogs had jewels glued to their foreheads.

“Our staff was shocked and confused. Many of them have been working in animal care for many years and had never seen anything quite like it,” Emma Diemert, shelter supervisor, told The Dodo.

The Scars of Their Past

After the shelter’s vet initially removed the glued-on jewels, they noted that the adhesive caused secondary burns to the dogs’ skin.

The dogs were adopted by a loving family, but when their owner passed away, they were left alone. That’s when they found themselves back at Sonoma County Animal Services, where their journey took an inspiring turn.

Finding a Loving Home

Sonoma County Animal Services reached out to Muttville Senior Dog Rescue to help these now-seniors find their forever home.

“They are very sweet and friendly dogs who are great around people and get along well with other dogs,” Lisa Arden, the pair’s foster mom, told The Dodo. “They continue to blossom in foster, showing both of their silly personalities. They are both still quite active and love to run around and play. They are just the most wonderful dogs!”

The Pups’ Personalities

Peanut Butter is a male Beagle and Pug mix, known for his calm and exploratory nature. At 22 pounds, he’s the perfect companion, always eager to sniff and wag his tail, Fox LA reports. Jelly, on the other hand, is a female Chihuahua mix weighing 14 pounds. She’s celebrated for her exceptional snuggling skills, and her big personality shines through her tiny frame.

TikTok Fame and Adoption

The pups’ story took an unexpected twist when a TikTok video Arden created went viral. With over 2.7 million views and 426,000 likes, it was clear that Peanut Butter and Jelly had captured the hearts of many.

Their growing popularity on TikTok led to a generous fan covering their adoption fee, bringing them closer to finding a loving forever home.

The Power of Resilience

Despite the trauma they endured, Peanut Butter and Jelly remain happy and friendly dogs. As Newsweek reports, they have not lost their faith in humanity.

“They were immediately so happy and friendly when I got them,” Arden said. “They love meeting new people and are wonderful dogs.”

A Plea for a Forever Home

Muttville Senior Dog Rescue is a nonprofit organization in San Francisco, committed to finding loving homes for dogs over the age of seven. According to the New York Post, they hope to adopt Peanut Butter and Jelly into the same household to maintain their strong bond.

@allthefosterpups This is the story of my foster dogs Peanut Butter & Jelly. Their story is a sad one, but hopefully one that will soon have a happy ending once they find their forever home. PB & J are just the best of friends who have had a bit of a rough life so far. But they’ve shown us once again how resilient senior dogs are and how much love senior dogs have to give, no matter what they’ve been through.
