Meet Panchito.

The young husky mix arrived at Harris County municipal shelter unable to put weight on his hind left leg and in need of immediate medical care.

The overcrowded shelter did not have the resources to care for Panchito, so they put out a plea for help. He was at risk of euthanasia due to his injuries that were causing him pain, if help did not arrive. Houston Humane Society came to the rescue.

They told us, “We knew that bringing him into our care would give us the option to explore what avenues existed for healing his injury and improving his quality of life while managing his pain.”

X-rays revealed that he has a dislocated right hip and a fracture in his left tibia. Even though he is clearly in pain, he still shows his gratitude to his rescuers. “Panchito is a very affectionate pup who seeks out human contact at every opportunity, hobbling between vets and vet techs to give kisses and nudge their hands for pets.”

He has a long road of recovery ahead of him including two surgeries. The costly procedures will give him the best chance at regaining his ability to run and play again.

The shelter contacted Greater Good Charities’ Emergency Animal Medical fund for help. The fund provides grants to animal rescues and shelters to cover the cost of emergency surgery and ongoing medical care to give shelter pets the second chance they deserve.

Panchito’s chances of adoption without treatment are slim to none.

“By undergoing an FHO surgery and having the tibia fracture cross-pinned, Panchito’s prospects for recovery are favorable. Through surgical intervention and subsequent physical therapy, his pelvis and leg should mend. There may be some residual gait abnormalities or lameness post-surgery, but his injuries will be healed, granting him improved mobility to pursue his dreams of running and playing,” shared the shelter.

His caretakers said, “Thanks to his sweet and playful personality, his beautiful husky coat, and his stunning mismatched eyes, we believe that Panchito will make an exceptional addition to any family.”

Pets receiving critical care facilitated by an Emergency Animal Medical grant may not be eligible for adoption until they have completed their course of treatment. If you would like to inquire about adoption of a specific animal, we strongly encourage you to visit the shelter’s specific website first as that is often the most up to date place to learn about available pets and review the adoption policies and process. Check out Houston Humane Society’s website to see all adoptable pets.

The friendly fella will quickly find a home once he recovers, but he needs your support to get there.

Help us meet our goal of $6,000 to heal Panchito’s injuries. Your support will not only give him the hope to keep fighting, but your donations will help cover his ongoing care.
