Every year, Rockefeller’s in New York puts out a beautiful Christmas tree display. It has become an iconic tradition enjoyed by the city.
But this year’s Christmas tree contained quite the surprise guest after a tiny owl was discovered with the Rockefeller’s Christmas tree.
Following the transport of the tree from Oneonta to New York City, the company doing the tree delivery made the shocking discovery of the little Saw-whet owl. She was quickly delivered to the Ravensbeard Wildlife Center for care where she was given fluids and fed mice.
It was quite a harrowing journey for the little owl who had been without food and water for three days while the tree was making its way to the Rockefeller Center. Naturally, there was only one appropriate name for the intrepid little survivor: Rockefeller.

Following a few days of rest and recovery, Rockefeller was ready to be released. She was cared for by the avian experts at the center who cleared her for release back into the wild, citing that she was ready to begin her “migratory journey at dusk.”

Little Rockefeller, affectionally nicknamed Rocky for short, was released on the 24th of November following the staff locating the perfect area of conifers in order to provide the little bird the best cover possible.
Ravensbeard posted to Facebook that Rocky’s release had been a “success,” writing that he was a “tough little bird” and adding that they were thrilled to see her return to her natural habitat. They thanked those who supported Rocky in her journey, writing that that “she will feel your love and support through her journey south.”
Rocky isn’t the only bird that the Ravensbeard Center cared for. In fact, the wildlife center is known to take in a variety of wildlife creatures whether they’re birds, mammals, or reptiles. As a result, they’re always busy helping little critters in need.
