Volunteers and staff at Fort Worth Animal Care & Control are giving over 300 shelter pets something to be thankful for – a delicious feast.

The shelter is about to host their second “Thanksgiving at the Shelter”, where they prepare special turkey meals for every shelter pet in their care.

“They’re going to get a little bit of turkey, some green beans, mashed potatoes, some pumpkin,” Jessica Brown, the shelter’s superintendent, told KRLD, “and then, of course, we’ll top it off with a few dog treats as well.”

The cats will eat a balanced meal as well. “The cats are going to be eating a special ‘Thanksgiving Day Dinner’ cat food that was purchased for them by some of our donors,” Brown said.

The special feast is possible thanks to generous people who fulfilled the shelter’s Amazon wish list. They made a plea for help and the community answered.

This feast is being prepared with dogs and cats in mind, but feeding your pet Thanksgiving table scraps can be dangerous. Be sure to check out what is safe to share with your dog or cat here.

In addition to the donations, locals are volunteering to help prep and feed the meals to the homeless dogs and cats, better known as “turkey tasters”. The prepping will start on Wednesday and be live on their Facebook page. Be sure to check back on Thursday morning to see the dog and cats devour the food.

After a nice long nap, the dogs and cats will be eager to find their forever homes on Black Furday. All adoption fees will be waived on November 27, in hopes of finding dogs like Cappy a home for the holidays. “This older gentleman promises to wait patiently for his share of your dinner plate and snuggle up on the couch for post-feasting naps.”
