Prior to the day he saved her life, Brian James had never met Meadow, the 1 year-old Golden Retriever who disappeared in the sprawling forests around Andes, New York. Nor was the hiking guide/drone pilot acquainted with the dog’s owners, Gary and Debbie Morgan. All this Good Samaritan knew for sure was that a dog had been lost for 10 days in the woods, and that winter was closing in.
“I’m realizing that [it] might be easy to see her from the air if we find her before snow [falls],” the Cairo, New York man told ABC World News Tonight, recalling how he first learned about Meadow’s plight from a ‘missing dog’ poster circulating online.
Aware time was of the essence, the New Yorker jumped in his car and drove to the area where Meadow was last seen. This is where he launched his drone and began canvassing the sprawling woods, hoping to catch an aerial glimpse of the dog from above the trees.
His efforts must have seemed futile at first, but suddenly James glimpsed a flash of white fur. “I was able to get a visual on Meadow from the air,” the drone pilot recalled.
James quickly raced to the area, where he found Meadow safe — and in surprisingly good shape after 10 days on her own. The dog is typically shy around strangers, but in this case, the grateful pup ran towards her rescuer with her tail wagging. “At the last second, he saw a small white dot on the forest floor. … It was Meadow,” said owner Gary Morgan, who was “overjoyed” when this heroic stranger brought his missing dog home.

Gary and Debbie are obviously thrilled to be reunited with Meadow, but they’re equally impressed and indebted to the kind stranger who stepped up to save their dog’s life. “[We’re] just so grateful for Brian for showing up when he did and being able to rescue her,” Debbie Morgan told World News Tonight.
But James, as it turns out, is also a modest hero. “Everybody’s got the capability to help,” he said. “You never know what will come of it.”
