As cat owners, we do the best to care for our furry felines and give them the best lives possible. This includes ensuring they have proper food, housing and medical care.

Sometimes, a cat might present with symptoms that can be worrying or even point to a neurological disorder.

According to Pet Helpful, Dr. Mark dos Anjos stepped in to answer a question from a Bengal cat owner named Myrna.

Myrna said: “My Bengal cat is falling over when he walks as though his balance is off. He’s also lost a lot of weight, and he’s cold to the touch. He sleeps all day, but he’s still eating and drinking water. It’s been over two weeks now! I’m afraid. What do I do?”

According to Dr. Mark, there are many neurological diseases that can impact a cat’s life, including diseases that can present at birth and later in life.

Dr. Mark shared a list of potential conditions that could match Myrna’s cat’s symptoms below:

Infectious Disease:

Diseases including Feline Infectious Peritonitis (FIP), Feline leukemia and feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV). Additionally, Rabies, toxoplasmosis, and many other infections can cause neurological symptoms in cats.

Idiopathic Disease:

Neurological disease in Bengal cats can present when no infection or other cause has been identified.

Trauma:

Trauma can occur when pet owners aren’t watching, especially if they’re allowed to wander outside. Swelling in the brain can result in symptoms developing hours after the trauma.

Epilepsy:

Over time, a cat with epilepsy may developing a loss of balance.

Vestibular Syndrome:

Cats with VS present with incoordination and sometimes a head tilt.

Cancer:

Some types of cancer can affect the brain and result in neurological symptoms.

Dementia:

Senior cats can get dementia and present with neurological symptoms as a result.
