Dallas Pets Alive (DPA) is working hard to save dogs and cats by offering resources, education, and programs to eliminate the killing of companion animals. They save pets that are scheduled to be euthanized or need medical care and give them a chance at a forever home.

The organization is able to save these pets thanks to countless volunteers, their “robust foster system”, and supporters who give their time, open up their hearts and homes, and donate money. Since 2012, they have saved roughly 6,000 pets and their goal is save even more by making North Texas no-kill.

One of the dogs rescued is named Bruschetta. The 12-year-old lived her entire life on the streets and never had a toy to play with. She has been in a DPA foster home for 6 months where she has proven that old dogs can learn new tricks and that cats aren’t the only ones who enjoy playing with cardboard boxes.

Etta, as she is called by her foster family, loves treats and quickly learned basic commands, how to walk nicely on a leash, and how to ask for affection. “She’s a silly cuddle bug that spends all day following her foster mom everywhere, and nothing makes her happier than going on adventures where she can meet new people and dogs,” shared the rescue.

She is experiencing all life has to offer and loves nothing more than playing with and in Chewy boxes. When the online pet food retailer found out they did the sweetest thing.

They sent a box with her name on it to the shelter filled with toys and goodies for the senior pup. They even included a card that read, “We are just in love with you! Your heartfelt story, resilience, and peaceful approach to life is truly inspiring. Here are some goodies to enjoy and a meditation buddy for those extra zen days. We know a loving fur-ever home is in your future, and can’t wait to hear all about it!”

Chewy also thanked DPA for all their hard work.

Etta loved all of her gifts, but the empty box was her favorite. The rescue shared a video on TikTok of the senior gal enjoying her goodies and said, “Bruschetta is so grateful for the little things in life. Imagine how happy she’d be with a family. Adopt this Rescue Hippo.”
