In January 2014, I lost my beloved cat, Scully, at the age of 17. I was completely devastated but knew that, when the time was right, I wanted to rescue two cats together to be part of my family. Then I heard the story of Maya and Luna.
On February 25, 2014 (ironically World Spay Day), the Langley shelter received a call from someone saying that they were sending them two pregnant cats in a cab and one of the cats was actually giving birth while the caller spoke!
Around 20 minutes later, a taxi pulled in to the shelter and in the backseat was a large box and a gym bag. It was Luna in the large box and Maya in the gym bag. Luna had already had two kittens in the taxi but was so terrified that she hadn’t taken care of them. Thankfully, the shelter staff were able to clean and warm them and Luna eventually had one more kitten that she was comfortable enough to take care of herself.
The two cats and Luna’s three kittens were put into foster care right away, and Maya had six kittens exactly one week later. Both moms took turns feeding and cleaning all nine kittens. The shelter posted about these two moms, and my heart was taken! The shared parenting was so sweet to watch.
Maya and Luna were back and forth between foster care and the shelter as a result of many health scares: possible ringworm, URI’s, fevers… it didn’t seem to end.
Despite everything, these two mamas did a great job mutually taking care of their kittens. Tragically, Luna ended up losing two kittens but in the end, every one of the remaining kittens was adopted into a loving home.
I was the lucky one – I was selected to adopt these two special sisters! I brought them home on May 10, 2014, and they fill my heart with joy every day!
