When we welcome a dog into our homes, we do our best to take care of them in the best way possible. For some pet parents, that means giving their pups prescription dog food.
Those who rely on certain lots of Purina prescription dog food should be aware that the company recently issued a recall after dogs got sick after eating the food.
Nestlé Purina PetCare Company produces a lot of pet food, and they’ve just issued a voluntary recall of specific prescription dog food over potentially dangerous levels of vitamin D.
According to a news release from the U.S. Food & Drug Administration, Purina received “two separate confirmed cases of a dog exhibiting signs of vitamin D toxicity after consuming the diet, to date. Once taken off the diet, each of these dogs recovered.”
Per the FDA, vitamin D is essential for dogs, but too much can lead to health issues. In fact, signs of vitamin D toxicity may include the following:
– vomiting
– loss of appetite
– increased thirst
– increased urination
– excessive drooling
– kidney dysfunction
The dog food affected by the recall includes select lots of the Purina Pro Plan Veterinary Diets El Elemental (PPVD EL) in 8 lb and 20 lb bags (UPC Codes: 38100 19190 for 8 lb bags and 38100 19192 for 20 lb bags).
Recalled bags include the following production codes:
2249 1082
2250 1082
2276 1082
2277 1082
2290 1082
2360 1082
